Washington DC Convention Center; Washington, DC
Jemal Hinton 26-2-2 (19) Maryland IBF WBC
vs.
Jesse Benavides 36-5-1 (24) Texas WBO WBA
- The day after Christmas will decide who the undisputed World Champion of the Jr. Feather Weight division is, when Jemal Hinton returns close to his boyhood home of District Heights, Maryland to fight Jesse Benavides at the Washington DC Convention Center. With Don King doing his usual excellent job of promoting all seats to the 7,000+ venue quickly sold out weeks in advance. Tickets sold were packaged together as a “Christmas Special” and each ticket sold included an autographed photo of Jemal Hinton and Jesse Benavides posing for the cameras in a staredown, along with the April 1993 edition of “Ring Magazine”.
- As the trainer of both fighters, Emanuel Steward chose to not work the corner of either. So instead, Hinton trained for the fight with his father in Washington and reports were that it went well. Benavides had Tony Ayala Sr. working his corner, which he had done in the past.
- The odds makers had installed the Texan as a 3-1 favorite to emerge as the Jr. Feather Weight World Champion. The odds of winning the entire tournament when it started had been 12-1 for Benavides and 20-1 for Hinton.
