In '78, the Red Sox were 14 games up in July. On Sept 10 they were tied, as the Yankees got hot and the Red Sox were decimated by injuries and cooled off. The Yanks were then 3 1/2 up on Sept. 16, but what people forget is that the Red Sox went 12-2 the rest of the way (including 8 straight wins to end it) to catch up and tie it before the dramatic one-game playoff.
It's never over 'til someone's eliminated.
