My league imported just fine but after a while playing OOTPX, I thought the game would much better enjoyed with a new league.
The reality is that any game which introduces completely new ratings systems (like the new pitching system) is going to encounter some problems being flawlessly backwards compatible because it has to account for values that weren't there in the old version. And after approximating these values taking into account the existing ratings of the pitchers you have, the resulting ratings made the AI think that these relievers were made better starters than the guys in the rotation.
There is no real bug, so to speak, and the game is working properly. Just because Papelbon is the closer in Boston doesn't mean an AI processing raw empirical information with no pre-conceptions wouldn't find him a better starter; after all, he was brought up as a starter, has the stuff to be a starter, and most think that starters are far more valuable than closers.
I think some serious under-estimation of what these core game engine changes meant occurred. OOTPX functions well for leagues designed with its pitching system in mind. Having oddities creep on upon converting older leagues is absolutely unavoidable, unforunately. I bought Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 hoping I could use my old roller coasters in the game, and when some of them didn't import correctly I didn't demand a refund claiming the game didn't was unplayable.
