Carbajal became the second top ten seed to be knocked out of the competition. There were pre fight rumours that the American fighter had taken his opponent lightly and gone easy in his training. His appearance when he entered the ring seemed to confirm this.

Behind on points, suffering from bruising around his left eye and bleeding from the mouth Carbajal was behind on points going into the last third of the bout, he rallied to win the eighth and ninth rounds but Kobayashi had something left in the tank and won the tenth and final stanza decisively.

Kobayashi advances to meet Sot Chitalada in the next round.
