Northern League Report
The Sacramento Stingers, who came 1 loss shy of 100 last year despite having the Northern League Outstanding Hitter, have started quickly and sit tied for the West division lead with the defending champion Wichita Brigade.
While not excelling in any aspect, the Stingers have gotten solid pitching and offense, ranking 3rd in runs and ERA. And they have gotten off to the strong start without George Hall, who tore his hamstring the first week of spring training and is just returning. That should counter the loss of Socks Seybold, who hit four homers in the first two weeks then went out with a hamstring injury of his own. He's expected back in mid-May.
Wichita has won its last 7, keeping up it's streaky start - win 3, lose 3, win 3, lose 5, win 7. Jay Hughes, who won 18 games a year ago, has yet to take the hill this season but is active. Rube Waddell, who won 27 games a year ago as the Northern League's Outstanding Pitcher, is back at it again, leading the NL in strikeouts for a staff that, as it did a year ago, leads the league in pitching.
And yet, the team in the West drawing the most notice is the Chicago Hitmen. Babe Ruth has shown no need for a learning curve, tied for the PBL lead in RBIs with 26 in his first month. The Hitmen, who went 58-104 last year, have started 10-12 - though they have lost 8 of 11. Albert Pujols is tied for third in the NL in batting. It seems, for now anyway, the odd man out in the abundance of bats is Mark Teixeira, whose .180 spring did little to help his cause. Josh Hamilton is in center, Ruth is in left, Pujols is at first and Adam Dunn is the DH.
In the East, the New York Heroes have the NL's ERA and wins leaders - Jim McCormick (1.84) and Bill Byrd (5), respectively. The only starting pitcher not throwing well so far is Harry Howell, who won 19 games a year ago but sits currently with an ERA over 6.
The Heroes are chased presently by the Louisville Racers, who are riding Dan Brouthers and Roy Oswalt - the same horses who led them last year - as far as they will carry them. Shortstop Hughie Jennings, who hit .250 last year as a late-season callup, is batting .310 with 4 homers so far.
