Jr. Middle Quarter Finals
Wednesday, July 8th 1992
Civic Center, Providence, RI
Vinny Pazienza 34-7 (24) RI WBA
vs.
Jorge Castro 72-3-3 (50)
- Castro was a 3-2 favorite.
- The 3 judges were from Italy, USA-California, and Mexico. The referee was from New York.
- Pazienza was missing his usual exuberance during ring introductions and the lethargy continued during the fight. In round 2 Pazienza went down and barely beat the count at 9.
- The often unused, and underrated, boxing skills of Pazienza were on display in round 3. Castro continued with his bullish rushes and wild overhand rights, but Pazienza’s began to sidestep and counter.
- A right wobbled Pazienza in round 4 and he was on unsteady legs for most of that round.
- An accidental headbutt in round 5 opened up a cut above Castro’s right eye.
- Both fighters took turns fouling the other throughout the fight. After 6 rounds Ringside Expert Richard Plunkett had it for Castro by 5 points, 59-54. Punches landed favored Castro 90-66.
- The Pazmaniacs who had filled the Providence, Rhode Island Civic Center to the full capacity of 14,000 continued to cheer themselves hoarse while rooting for Pazienza.
- At the start of round 7 a small mouse could be seen under Pazienza’s right eye (2). Pazienza was having his best round of the fight when he was caught by a Castro combination. A disgusted Pazienza pounded the canvas with his gloves before rising at “6”.
- Pazienza was cut over the right eye in round 8.
- Pazienza tried over the final 4 rounds to turn the fight around, but it just wasn’t his night. Ringside Expert Richard Plunkett had it for Castro 119-108. Punches landed favored Castro 231 to 171. The face of Pazienza was a battered mess at the bell with his right eye half shut (12) and a closed cut over it. The 3 official judges had it: Mexico judge 117-110, Italy judge 117-114, and California judge 118-108 all for Castro.
- The classy Pazienza applauded the decision, took the microphone and encouraged his fans to do the same, which they did in response to his request.
