14# Matthew Hilton 34-5-2 (23) Canada
vs.
24# Ron Amundsen 22-9-1 (8) New Jersey
- After being shockingly kayoed in 1 round, 6 months ago by a fighter (Pat Lawlor) who had only 5 wins by KO or TKO to his credit out of 20 wins, many were saying it was time for the 27 year old Hilton to call it a career. A career that had really begun 22 years earlier when Matthew Hilton had his first boxing match as a 5 years old. Hilton was looking forward to getting his career back on track with a win over the 24# ranked Amundsen.
- Originally from Chicago, “The Stomin’ Mormon” Ron Amundsen now lives and trains in New Jersey. Having lost 6 of his past 8 fights, many questioned how Amundsen could still be ranked 24#. His last big win had been in 1990 when he W12 over Arthur Serwano and capatured the USBA title in the process. Since that big win Amundsen has been put in tough with 6 different contenders or prospects and been on the losing end each time.
- Other than a heavily bleeding cut lip sustained in round 7, Hilton pretty much steamrolled over “The Stormin’ Mormon”. Amundsen was knocked down in rounds 9 and 10, while coming out on the short end of most exchanges. The 3 judges had it 99-88, 99-87, and 98-89 all for Hilton. On average Hilton landed 80 punches per round compared to only 19 for Amundsen.
