Pastime Baseball League
June Review (cont.)

Southern League Report

As was the case in the Northern League, the division leaders down South created their own distance in the past month.

If there was any doubt, the New Orleans Knights are for real. Leading the Southern League in runs and boasting the league's second-best ERA, the Knights have put themselves 12 games ahead of the second place Orlando Orcas.

Five hitters have double digit homers, and team also leads all of baseball in OBP at .358. Rookie shortstop George Wright (.290-12-42) is on place to score more than 130 runs, as Sam Thompson (.278-16-46), Topsy Hartsel (.293-11-59) and Prince Fielder (.250-10-58) drive him in with regularity.

Key to New Orleans' surge has been the continued dominance of Mark Prior (14-1, 2.32) and the return to form of Doc McJames (8-8, 3.40), who posted a 1.99 ERA in June.

If Orlando could get any pitching, they could make gains on New Orleans. But a powerhouse lineup including Ryan Howard (.288-19-51), Ezra Sutton (.344-11-62) and Rookie of the Year contender Buck Freeman (.307-15-49) is negated by a rotation that has posted a collective ERA of 5.25.

The defending Southern League champion Memphis Strummers have seen a collective collapse of their offense besides the dominant Oscar Charleston. Ryan Braun (.263-13-60) has cooled off and Cap Anson (.260-4-30) is far off his pace of last season, when he drove in 128 runs.

Out west, the San Antonio Sheriffs have the league's best pitching staff, anchored by Brandon Webb (8-5, 2.64), Ted Trent (10-3, 3.15) and rookie Dick Rudolph (7-2, 2.75). That doesn't even factor last year's Outstanding Pitcher Noodles Hahn (9-7, 5.18) who has improved but is far from the force he was last season, when he struck out a whopping 383 batters.

Key to San Antonio's success - and 15-game lead - has been Hugh Duffy (.326-10-58), who has made Sheriffs fans forget all about last year's struggles.
