I seem to have turned on a button on the toolbar, causing them to appear, but have so far been unable to figure out what that button is.

Turn off the switch editor mode when you just paste text with bolded or colored font. You will have to manually select words to bold and color, etc, but it os better than the arrows.
The only thing I have the text editor turned on for is when I copy spreadsheets.
