Light Heavyweight Title Shot Eliminator Round
Sunday, June 7th, 1992
Cobo Arena; Detroit, MI
3# Thomas Hearns 51-5-1 (40) Michigan
vs.
8# Frank Tate 31-3 (17) Texas- - Hearns was a 4-1 favorite.
- - Cobo Arena was packed to the rafters with fans of Thomas Hearns. Would he put in a “Hitman” or “Motor City Cobra” performance?
ROUND 1: Tate 36-14 (Thomas Hearns looked like neither the “Hitman” or “Motor City Cobra” in this round. Tate out boxed him and made Hearns look slow.)
ROUND 2: Hearns 27-24 (Hearns was struggling to get his punches off, when he did Tate was already gone or had a glove up to block. Finally, with less than 45 seconds remaining in the round, the vaunted Hearns right hand got through. Tate remained standing, but was at least momentarily stunned.
ROUND 3: Tate 24-14 (Other than a big uppercut, Hearns was on the receiving end of most exchanges and beginning to look all of his 34 years.)
ROUND 4: Hearns 35-0 (This was an excellent round for Tommy Hearns. He blasted Tate with hooks, right hands, and uppercuts throughout. Still…Tate withstood all of the punches and Hearns looked to be exhausted at the rounds end.)
ROUND 5: Hearns 21-18 (Hearns took a breather, but still managed to win the round. After 5 rounds Ringside Expert Steve McCarthy had Hearns in front 48-47.)
ROUND 6: Hearns 20-12 (Right hands from Hearns that had been missing earlier, were now landing.)
ROUND 7: Hearns 14-12 (Tate was now tired more so than Hearns.)
ROUND 8: Hearns 26-0 (Another good round in the books for Hearns.)
ROUND 9: Hearns 28-12 (The “Motor City Cobra” was content to box on the outside, where he effectively countered the Tate misses. The right and left eyes of Tate both had small mouses under them of 7% and 9% closed.)
ROUND 10: Hearns 20-16 (More of the same, with Hearns boxing well from the outside.)
DECISION: 98-92, 98-92, and 97-93 all for the winner by unanimous decision ….. Thomas Hearns! The Detroit native will now fight Prince Charles Williams for the IBF title.
