Haren throws two-hitter
Hamilton drives in all six Tampa runs
October 6, 2009
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Danny Haren and Josh Hamilton teamed up to lead the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 6-0 win over the Texas Rangers in Game 5 of the Division Series, putting the defending champs back in the American League Championship Series.
Haren held the Rangers lineup to two hits and three walks in a complete game shutout, striking out nine Texas batters on the way.
"Danny really stepped up tonight with a huge performance," said Devil Rays manager Christian O'Neal. "He was fantastic."
Hamilton provided all the run support Haren would need, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and six RBI as he hit a Grand Slam off Brandon Webb in the fourth inning and then a two-run jack against Edward Mujica in the eighth inning.
"Josh was our MVP for this round of the playoffs, for sure," O'Neal said. "As good as Pedro was in Game 2, and Danny tonight, and everything else that everyone else has done, Josh has been the rock so far in the playoffs."
Hamilton hit .389 with five home runs and 11 RBI in the five game series with Texas.
The Devil Rays will take on the AL West champion Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the ALCS, which kicks off at Tropicana Field on Wednesday night. The winner will go to the World Series to play either the Arizona Diamondbacks or Los Angeles Dodgers.
