Devil Rays will defend title
Tampa Bay wins American League pennant
October 13, 2008
ANAHEIM — The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are heading back to the World Series to defend their championship title from last season.
The Devil Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tonight, 7-2 in Anaheim in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series.
Pedro Martinez pitched the pennant-clinching game, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks in seven innings, striking out six.
Gerald Laird, Josh Hamilton and Matt Holliday each hit home runs for the Devil Rays with Hamilton driving in four runs in the game. Michael Young went 3-for-5 at the top of the order.
Ryan Howard was the only player in the starting lineup not to get a hit for Tampa Bay, and he was ejected for arguing a called third strike in the fifth inning. Howard bumped the home plate umpire during the argument and the commissioner's office is looking into a possible suspension, which would take place during the World Series. If that happens, it would be a huge blow to the Devil Rays as they play a best-of-seven series for baseball's championship.
