Fractured elbow ends career year

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Devil Rays quest for a third straight World Series took a big hit tonight as they lost pitcher Zack Greinke for the season with a fractured elbow.

Greinke went 10-0 with a 3.44 ERA for Tampa Bay this season, and was on his way to an 11th win at Tropicana Field against the New York Yankees when he suffered the elbow injury.

Greinke was perfect through four innings with six strikeouts when he was taken out of the game.

He finishes the year at 10-0 in 20 starts, and was on pace to go 16-0 on the season. Greinke is now 36-11 with a 3.45 ERA in his career.

Devil Rays manager Christian O'Neal said he and the front office will discuss whether Jon Lester will take Greinke's spot in the rotation, or if any sort of trade can be made before the rapidly approaching July 31 trade deadline.
