Hershiser Magnificent In 2-1 Dodgers Win
Houston,Tx.-Astros starter Nolan Ryan(0-1) allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits over 8 innings pitched, but it still wasn't enough to beat the Dodgers thanks to a sparkling performance by pitcher Orel Hershiser(1-0) who went 8 shutout innings, allowing just 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Closer Tom Niedenfuer allowed 2 hits and a run in the 9th but hung on to get the save.
In Other National League Games
Von Hayes had a pair of RBI singles and Mike Schmidt added a two run homer to give Phillies starter John Denny(1-0) more than enough support in the Phils 4-0 victory over Atlanta.
Deadlocked at 0-0 entering the 11th,the Mets self destructed, allowing Tommy Herr to score on a Jesse Orosco wild pitch and then Jack Clark on an error by Keith Hernandez off the bat of Darrell Porter as the Cardinals hung on to defeat New York 2-0.St Louis starter John Tudor pitched 9 innings of shutout ball, while the Mets Dwight Gooden blanked the Cards for 7 and a third, neither pitcher was involved in the decision.
Cubs starter Dennis Eckersley allowed just 1 run on 9 hits over 7 and two thirds innings as the Cubs defeated the Pirates 5-2.Davey Lopes and Shawn Dunston each had two doubles and an RBI for Chicago.
An RBI double by Chris Brown followed by RBI singles by Chili Davis, Bob Brenly, and Bill Wellmeyer in the bottom of the first inning gave Giants starting pitcher Atlee Hammaker(1-0) all that he would need as San Francisco upended visiting San Diego 4-2. Hammaker allowed 2 runs on 3 hits to get the win, Dave Dravecky(0-1) took the loss.
In The American League
Charlie Moore's RBI double in the bottom of the 5th was the only run of the game, as the Milwaukee Brewers behind 8 and a third shutout innings by Teddy Higuera(1-0) defeated Tom Seaver(0-1) and the White Sox 1-0. Rollie Fingers collected the save.
Bob Kearney and Ken Phelps each had a homer and 3 RBI, while SS Spike Owen added 3 hits and 3 RBI of his own as Seattle destroyed Oakland 10-3. Starting pitcher Matt Young(1-0) got the win for Seattle while veteran Don Sutton took the loss.
Juan Beniquez's solo homer in the bottom of the 1st quickly gave the Angels a 1-0 lead on the Twins, but a 7th inning homer by Randy Bush tied it and eventually sent the game to extra innings where the Twins would win the ballgame 2-1 on a Greg Gagne two out RBI double that scored Steve Lombardozzi.
