Mets Use Longball To Defeat Cardinals 3-2

Flushing,NY-Howard Johnson's solo home run in the bottom of the 6th followed by a Mookie Wilson solo shot in the 7th gave Mets starting pitcher Ron Darling(1-0) all the breathing room he would need to take down the visiting Cardinals 3-2.Darling was simple overpowering, allowing a run on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 8 over 8 innings. Closer Jesse Orosco hung on for the save. For the Cardinals, starting pitcher Joaquin Andujar(0-1) pitched valiantly in defeat, going the distance and allowing 9 hits and 3 runs.

A three run 6th inning, capped off by pitcher Zane Smith's third hit of the day, an RBI single to right put Atlanta ahead to stay, as they went on to defeat Philadelphia 4-2. The New York Yankees have announced that they have come to terms with star reliever Dave Righetti on a one year contract extension worth in the neighborhood of $1,005,000.The contract will keep Righetti in New York through the 1986 season.
