Puckett Goes 5 For 5 In 6-3 Win Over Mariners
The Kingdome,Seattle Wa.-Minnesota Twins CF Kirby Puckett was simple unstoppable today, collecting 5 hits while leading the Twins past the Mariners 6-3. Despite being on the road, Minnesota came prepared to play, scoring 5 times in the top of the first inning, to give starting pitcher Mark Portugal(1-0) a nice cushion from which to work. Portugal, who struggled a bit still had enough to get it done, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits over 5 and a third innings before handing the ball to relief men Dennis Burtt and then Ron Davis who held the Mariners hitless the rest of the way.

In Other Games Of Note

The Toronto Blue Jays continued to struggle early on, falling to the Orioles 9-0 in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. On the hill,Baltimore pitcher Mike Flanagan(1-0) went the distance for the shutout, allowing just 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5, LF Mike Young was the offensive star, going 2 for 4 with a homer and 3 RBI.

Johnny Ray's pinch hit RBI single in the bottom of the 10th was the difference in the game as the Pittsburgh Pirates got their first win of the season, defeating the Cardinals 2-1. Pirates reliever Kent Tekulve(1-0) got the win despite blowing the save in the 9th, while the Cards Jeff Lahti(1-0) took the loss.

2B Juan Samuel doubled, homered and knocked in four, while LF Von Hayes went 3 for 4 with a stolen base, a home run, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated Mike Scott(0-1) and the Houston Astros 11-4. Phils starter Shane Rawley(1-0) who allowed 4 runs in the first two innings, recovered nicely to go 7 innings while allowing 6 hits and 4 earned runs with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.
