October 10, 2009
KANSAS CITY — Pedro Martinez led the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 6-1 victory over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium tonight in Game 3 of the American League Division Series.
Martinez worked eight innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks, striking out six. The lone Kansas City run came on a Brandon Wood solo home run off Martinez in the eighth inning, ending the legend's shutout bid. David Aardsma worked a scoreless ninth inning with the five-run lead.
The Devil Rays pounded out 12 hits in the game, nine of them coming off Royals starting pitcher Matt Belisle, who gave up five runs on nine hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. Seven Tampa Bay players had a hit in the game, and five had multiple hits. Josh Hamilton and Nomar Garciaparra had a double, two hits and two RBI each. Garciaparra was given the start in place of Brendan Harris due to Belisle's success against Harris in the past.
