November 13, 2009
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Like Erubiel Durazo, Aubrey Huff, and Craig Breslow before him, Tampa Bay Devil Rays infielder Cliff Pennington was good enough his first season in the big leagues that he was honored as the Rookie of the Year.
Pennington, 25, won the award today after hitting .261 with 16 home runs, 72 RBI, 98 runs scored, and stealing 26 bases in 152 games. He played 104 games at second base, making four errors, and played in 51 games at shortstop, where the rookie made an additional four errors.
"We're really proud of Cliff," said Devil Rays manager Christian O'Neal. "The kid earned this award, that's for sure."
Pennington is the fourth Tampa Bay player to win the Rookie of the Year, the first since Breslow, who won the award last season.
