November 13, 2009
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Dan Haren didn't put up the same numbers he had in 2008, but his 2009 stats were good enough to win the Cy Young award.
Haren went 17-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 31 starts for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, posting a 1.06 WHIP and holding opponents to a .226 average.
Haren won the award last season, going 21-5 with a 2.48 ERA in 31 starts with a 1.05 WHIP and .219 opponents average against.
Devil Rays pitchers have won nine of the last 11 Cy Young awards with the lone exceptions being Ben Sheets of the Texas Rangers in 2005 and Hong-Chih Kuo of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2007.
Haren is the first Tampa Bay hurler to win the award multiple times since Pedro Martinez, who won the award six times, including five straight from 1999 through 2003.
