Devil Rays sweep big awards with slugger's win

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Ryan Howard will hit the free agent market shortly, and will his price tag may have gone up after winning the American League Most Valuable Player award for the 2009 season.

Howard hit .277 with 47 home runs, 132 RBI, and 126 runs in 154 games for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays this season, power numbers big enough to win the MVP.

While the Devil Rays fell short in their bid for a third straight World Series title, the team saw its players recognized frequently in the award season. Three players won Gold Glove awards, Cliff Pennington won Rookie of the Year, Dan Haren won the Cy Young, and now Howard has won the MVP.
