Jason Thompson Powers Pittsburgh To 5-4 Win Over Mets
Three Rivers Stadium,Pittsburgh,Pa.-Pirates first sacker Jason Thompson feasted on Mets pitching today, going 2 for 3 with a home run, 4 RBI and a run scored, leading Pittsburgh to a 5-4 victory over the New York Mets. Bucs starter Rick Reuschel(1-1) did just enough to win,allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while collecting 7 strikeouts in 7 and two thirds innings, evening his record at 1-1. Mets catcher Gary Carter doubled, homered and knocked in 2 in the loss.

Scott Sanderson pitched 8 strong innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 9 as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1. Chicago 1B Leon Durham's RBI double in the bottom of the 8th was the difference maker in the game.
