How is this unrealistic? Did you see Atlanta's Mark Wohlers throw a slider instead of his 100-mph fastball to Jim Leyritz, who had 2 strikes on him, during a critical at-bat in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series? This crap actually does happen in baseball.
Loopy decisions get made in baseball all the time, so an occasionally loopy AI is quite realistic. Now, if the AI was perfect and didn't do something randomly loopy in OOTP, that would be unrealistic. Even Earl Weaver did loopy stuff on occasion.
