Mattingly's RBI Single In 10th Sinks White Sox 6-5
Yankee Stadium,Bronx,NY-After falling behind 3-0 early, the yankees stormed back, getting a two run homer by Ken Griffey as well as RBI hits from Rickey Henderson, Andre Robertson and an RBI ground out by Willie Randolph to take a 5-3 lead into the 9th where normally reliable closer Dave Righetti could not hold the lead, giving up a two run triple to Ozzie Guillen tying the game at 5-5 and sending it to extra innings where Yankee 1B Don Mattingly won the game in dramatic fashion, with a bases loaded RBI single giving the Yankees the 6-5 victory. Dave Righetti(1-0) rebounded nicely to get the win, while Chicago's Bob James(0-2) took the loss.
In Other Games Of Note
San Francisco Giants starter Mike Krukow(1-0) allowed just 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 on his way to a dominating 1-0 complete game shutout victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Jeffrey Leonard's RBI single in the top of the 9th off of Reds reliever Frank Pastore(0-1) allowed 1B David Green to score the lone run of the game.
Tied at 3-3 entering the top of the 9th, the Dodgers Steve Sax slammed a double down the left field line, scoring RJ Reynolds and giving the Dodgers the eventual 4-3 victory over the Padres here in San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium. For the game, Sax went 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, 2 RBI and a run scored to lead the LA offensive attack. Dodger reliever Ken Howell(1-0) pitched a scoreless 8th to get the win, Steve Howe got the save.
In a beautifully played pitcher's duel, Red Sox RF Mike Greenwell's 2 run homer in the top of the 2nd wound up the only runs of the game as Boston shut out the Royals 2-0 thanks to a tremendous pitching performance by Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd(2-1) who allowed 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7 over 8 and two thirds scoreless innings toi earn his second win of the season. Bob Stanley collected the save, his 3rd. Brett Saberhagen(2-1) took the loss for Kansas City.

The Cincinnati Reds have traded 28 year old LF Duane Walker to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for 26 year old 2B Tim Teufel.
