Mets Storm Back To Dump Phillies In Extra Frames
Veterans Stadium,Philadelphia,Pa.-Despite getting a ferocious effort from starting pitcher Charles Hudson,who allowed 1 run on 5 hits while outdueling the Mets Dwight Gooden in the process the Phillies still could not get it done,thanks to a 3 run Met rally in the top of the 9th which tied the game at 4-4 and sent it to extra innings where in the top of the 13th,New York took the lead for good on a George Foster solo home run followed later by a Wally Backman RBI double that gave the Mets the eventual 6-4 win.On the mound,Mets reliever Wes Gardner(1-0) pitched three innings of 1 hit shutout ball to earn his first victory of the season while the Phils Don Carman(0-1) took the loss.

Dodgers starter Fernando Valenzuela(2-1) was just about as dominant as a pitcher could be today,going the distance while shutting out the Padres on 2 hits and 2 walks in LA's 2-0 victory.The game's only runs came in the 4th inning courtesy of a Greg Brock two run homer off of Padres starter Dave Dravecky(1-2)
Oakland A's starting pitcher Don Sutton(1-1) proved to everyone that he still had something left in the tank thanks to a 4-0 complete game shutout of the Minnesota Twins. Sutton,allowed just 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6 using just 102 pitches in the process.Offensively,the A's were led by LF Dave Collins who went 2 for 4 with a home run, 3 RBI and a run scored.Twins starter Mike Smithson(1-1) was saddled with the loss.
Finally showing signs of life,the Houston Astros got a fine pitching performance by Nolan Ryan(1-2) who allowed a run on 5 hits over 7 innings and a good day at the plate by 2B Bill Doran who went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Astros easily defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-1.Pascual Perez(0-3) took the loss for Atlanta.
