Heavyweight *world championship* 12-19-92
Saturday, December 19th, 1992
Wembley Stadium; London, England
Lennox Lewis 25-1 (18) England WORLD CHAMPION WBC IBF WBA WBO
vs.
1# Riddick Bowe 31-0 (25) New York
· Lewis a 3-2 favorite.
· Riddick Bowe was looking forward to the opportunity to avenge his 1988 Olympic defeat to Lennox Lewis. A crowd of over 90,000+ had filled Wembley Stadium and almost all of them were in attendance to cheer for Lennox Lewis.
· The referee was Chuck Hassett of Nevada. The 3 judges were from Netherlands, Japan, and Mexico.
ROUND 1: A feeling out, cautiously fought opening round by both fighters. (Lewis 16-6, Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis)
ROUND 2: A battle of stiff heavy jabs broke out and the left hand of Bowe had a slight edge over the left of Lewis. (Bowe 18-12, Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Bowe; 19-19 EVEN)
ROUND 3: Showing a willingness to rumble, Riddick Bowe got the better of Lewis in exchanges. The crowd sang and cheered for Lewis just the same. (Bowe 19-12, Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Bowe; 29-28 Bowe)
ROUND 4: Lewis opened up more with his punches and got the better of Bowe for most of the round. (Lewis 31-14, Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-10 EVEN; 39-38 Bowe)
ROUND 5: There were reports of arguments between Bowe and his manager Rock Newman in the days leading up to the fight and had many concerned that it was having an adverse affect on his training. Bowe became very aggressive in round 5, but was met with swift counter punches from Lewis in his attempts to pin the Englishman against the ropes. So far, this was easily Lewis’ best round of the fight.
(Lewis 24-0, Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis; 48-48 EVEN)
ROUND 6: Bowe was off his stool early to start round 6 after some inspiring words from his cutman, Ralph Citro. Bowe started the round well with a well placed hook to Lewis’ side. However, by the end of the round Lewis had regained control and whipping in shots of his own to Bowe’s ribs. (Lewis 20-7, Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis; 58-57 Lewis)
ROUND 7: After being hit by significantly low blow, which drew a stern warning from referee Chuck Hassett, Bowe rallied to have his best round since the third. (Lewis 19-13, Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Bowe; 67-67 EVEN)
ROUND 8: Bowe came out for round 8 looking tired, while Lewis still appeared fresh. Bowe was now loading up on his punches and looking to end it with one big one. He scored a big right hand and left hook early. Lewis soon replied with scoring shots of his own. The exchanges continued throughout the round and didn’t stop when the bell rang! (Lewis 24-18; Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis; 77-76 Lewis)
ROUND 9: Bowe and Lewis both fought a defensive battle in round 9, with a slight edge going to Lewis. (Lewis 18-10; Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Bowe; 86-86 EVEN)
ROUND 10: Lewis continued to effectively work over the body of Bowe, with the New Yorker having little in response. (Lewis 24-5; Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis; 96-95 Lewis)
ROUND 11: Another good round for Lewis. An exhausted Bowe was reduced to throwing one big punch at a time and rarely landing. (Lewis 17-10; Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis; 106-104 Lewis)
ROUND 12: Little action as Bowe was now at the point of being too exhausted to throw any and Lewis was content with boxing cautiously from the outside. (Lewis 17-00; Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis; 116-113 Lewis)
ROUND 13: Bowe was slow to rise from his stool at the bell, but did come out and throw punches with bad intentions once he did. When Bowe did manage to land, he was met by an attack of equal or greater ferocity. (Lewis 20-6; Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis; 126-122 Lewis)
ROUND 14: The faces of both fighters remained unmarked at the start of round 14. Few punches landed by either. (Bowe 10-7; Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Bowe; 135-132 Lewis)
ROUND 15: Lewis listened to his trainer, John Davenport’s instructions to take no chances because he had the fight won and that Bowe could only win by landing something desperate. Bowe came out showing some aggression, but not foolishly. The last punch of the fight was landed by Bowe, but it did not appear to be nearly enough of what was needed to swing the score cards in his favor. (Lewis 12-5; Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto 10-9 Lewis; 145-142 Lewis)
DECISION: The decision was announced as ….Mexico judge 145-140, Japan judge 146-139, and Netherlands judge 149-136 all for the winner by unanimous decision and …..STILL Heavyweight World Champion LENNOX LEWIS!
Lennox Lewis Wu15 Riddick Bowe
POST-FIGHT: Punches landed favored Lewis 273-141. After the fight it was announced that Lennox Lewis would next defend his World Championship against Tony Tucker in May of 1993. He will grant the new 1# Mandatory Contender Mike Tyson a shot at the World Championship sometime in the summer of 1993.
