In a battle between two of the top pitching teams in the National League,the St Louis Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 thanks to a tremendous performance by starting pitcher Danny Cox(4-1),who went 8 strong,allowing 1 run on 4 hits while walking 0 and striking out 4.Coming out on the short end,was Dodgers twirler Bob Welch(4-1),who lost for the first time this season,despite only giving up 2 runs(1 earned) on 5 hits and 5 walks,he also struck out 7 batters.After a slow start,the Cardinals have now begun to heat up,winning for the 6th straight time,and moving into 3rd place in the NL East,four and a half games behind the 1st place Cubs

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Dennis Eckersley will not be pulling up stakes anytime soon.The 30 year old veteran has singed a 6 year contract with the club worth in the neighborhood of $14,400,000.
The New York Yankees have traded 29 year old former Minnesota Twin Butch Wynegar to the Atlanta Braves for 37 year old veteran reliever Gene Garber.
