It is a nice-looking site. It might be a bit difficult to read with the black transparency, but it does look nice at a glance. I wonder if that throws people though. It could definitely do with a menu bar at the top as I don't like having to scroll so much.
Upgrading could very well make a difference for you, it could make a huge difference, but I don't think it should be taken as a panacea either. Is Alan right that there really are a tonne more leagues than say the 6.5 days? I dunno, maybe. I think he is very much right that if your league has nothing to differentiate it from others then what's going to draw people to your league over others? Yeah, there may be a lot more "modern league" online leaguers, but I doubt they're as.. long-staying? Regardless, it really does help to have a hook of some kind.
I also can't help but think that the more visible you are at the boards here, the more likely people are going to want to join your league. Look at Alan. He helps so many people with so many things that I'm not surprised he has no problem getting members. Sure, part of it may be his league's hooks too, but who wouldn't want to be a member of a league run by a community member like Alan? I may not be nearly as much of a helper nor a commissioner, but I probably have a similar advantage in recruiting for the CBL. One person remarked to me that he figured just having an earlier join date might be an advantage and that might be true too, but I figure your visibility and reputation here in general is probably more important than simply your join date.
Still, even just posts like yours above I think help show that you care about your league and want people to join. That's promising to prospective members in itself I would think. I think some people just expect throngs to want to join without much work at all.
