Saturday, January 8th, 1949

FLY: Taffy Hancock 14-0 (9) UD 8 Joe Bruce 7-7-2 (1)
Hancock did enough, outslugging Bruce to a close decision scored 78-75 twice and 77-76.

LW: Freddie Dawson 16-0 (1) UD 8 Mario Villegas 4-4-1 (1)
Dawson outboxed Villegas and cruised to the scores 79-73 twice and 80-72.

WW: Ray Robinson 21-0 (17) KO 3 Stephen Birling 8-8-1 (1)
The young american was as impressive as he has been in all his fights, battering Birling throughout, and when he got his man down, there were no doubt it was all over.

WW: Frankie Fernandez 23-1 (11) UD 10 Theron Wells 11-5-6 (3)
The fast and versatile Hawaiian did very, very well, although he was unable to become the first man to score a KO against Wells. Fernandez scored a KD in the 6th and the judges awarded him the scores of 100-90, 100-88 and 99-89.
