In the first game of this three game set,the Angels Mike Witt(6-0) got the best of the Tigers Jack Morris(5-3),going 7 and two thirds innings,while allowing 2 runs on 7 hits as California defeated Detroit 6-2.Gary Pettis and Ruppert Jones each had homers for the Angels.

In game two,the Tigers struck early and often,grinding out 10 runs on 15 hits to win in a blowout 10-0.Starting pitcher Randy O'Neal(4-1) pitched 5 shutout innings to get the win,allowing 1 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3.Offensively,the Tigers were led by LF Rusty Kuntz,who went 3 for 4 with a double,2 RBI and 2 runs scored.Bob Kipper(2-3) took the loss for the Angels.

Starting pitcher Kirk McCaskill(1-4) pitched 8 and a third strong innings,allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 6,and DH Reggie Jackson and 2B Bobby Grich each homered as California took the rubber match of the series 6-2.Tigers 1B Darrell Evans was 1 for 1 with 3 walks and 2 RBI in the loss.

On the managerial front,the Astros and Expos both have new skippers,and the names may sound familiar,Houston has hired former Expos manager Buck Rodgers,giving him a 5 year deal at $185,000 per season.In Montreal,the Expos have hired,you guessed it,former Astros manager Bob Lillis,giving him a 4 year deal at $195,000 per season.

Thanks to a huge day by Jorge Orta,who went 5 for 6 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored,the Kansas City Royals outslugged the Texas Rangers,defeating them 14-9,in a game that saw the teams combine for 33 hits.
