Ugh. The solution was that the installer scattered OotPB stuff around to three different places on my computer. Some (which I have now moved to Games) went to Applications, some to Documents, and some (not just the alias) to the desktop. The desktop stuff is now gone, and upon advice of counsel I won't touch what's in Documents. Lord only knows what it is or why it's there.
10.3.whatever had only the invisible stuff Steve referred to in Documents, at least on my computer, but what's there now is quite visible and seems to duplicate data files in the actual game.
As to why the computer's internal search program was unable to find either the patch or the updated game in October, I don't know. We may never know. I think next year I might just wait until the final patch comes out to download the thing for the first time. Since PISD took over, patching has been far more problematic for me than installing.
