Stupendous 6s, Elite 8 Fight 4, Jackson-Damiani Part Deux
Somehow, Jackson seemed out of shape coming in for the rematch . He dropped the 1st round, 11-2, as Damiani was boxing nicely, then came back with 12-2 & 11-2 rounds in the 2nd & 3rd. His jab was working well, and he was out-boxing the boxer! Francesco won a crowd-pleasing 4th, 18-11, landing a sweet right and 38 punches all told. Jackson won a slow 5th, 7-3, but his left eye was beginning to swell.
Phil took the 6th, 10-2, finding the range with a good uppercut, causing Damiani to clinch, then finishing the round with a sharp left! He was up 2 rounds on my card. Damiani began to hook big-time in the 7th, and Jackson’s eye was getting worse. Francesco took it, 11-6, and then built a good lead in the 8th, as Jackson’s lack of conditioning was beginning to tell. Jackson landed a desperation hook at the end of the round, but still fell on the south side, 10-6, and I had the fight even!
The 9th was precision boxing by Damiani against the long bombs attempted by Jackson. Phil landed a stupendous hook and a hard cross, but Francesco was like a surgeon, landing 39 precision-like punches, 16 crosses that had Jackson’s eye a mess! I had Damiani winning a good round, 15-13.
Damiani came out covering up for the 10th. He countered a Jackson bomb with a laser jab, and suddenly Phil was cut over his right eye! He kept tossing his bombs, but his vision was impaired, and Damiani gracefully slipped and countered, winning an artistic round, 6-2.
This time I had Damiani the winner, 96-94 Again, they’d both landed almost the same amount of punches, nearly 200. The judges scored it 97-93 Damiani, 95-94 Jackson, and 98-92 for, the winner by a split decision,…Francesco Damiani! Surely a rematch will be in order!
