Mutuals Clinch ABC Championship

October 21, 1875

New York entered October with a 2 game lead and a magic number of 4. On October 1, they beat Cincinnati 5-4. This increased their lead to 3 games and their magic number became 2. Then on October 5, they beat Washington 3-2 to cut the magic number down to 1. Their 9-8 victory over Washington on the 8th sealed the deal and the New York Mutuals are the 1875 ABC Champions.

After a subpar '74 season where he batted .262, Baltimore's Bill Gibbs rebounded in '75 to have an outstanding season, winning the first ever Triple Crown in ABC history. Gibbs hit .385 with 3 HRs and 44 RBIs. Gibbs is the 2nd player in history to hit 3 HRs in one season.
