MLB Game Of The Day
AT
Wrigley Field,Chicago,Ill.
Tuesday, June 25,1985
In today's tussle here at Wrigley, the Mets jumped all over Cubs starter Dennis Eckersley(11-2),who up to this point had been nearly unbeatable, entering the game with an imposing 11-1 record. This game has a way of humbling you though, and Eckersley sure was humbled, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits in just 4 innings,as New York cruised to an 8-2 victory.Doing most of the damage today was the duo of Lenny Dykstra and Howard Johnson, with Dykstra going 3 for 5 with a homer,3 RBI and a run scored, and Johnson going 3 for 5 with a double,a homer,1 RBI and 2 runs scored. On the mound, starting pitcher Rick Aguilera(5-6) twirled a gem, going the distance while allowing 2 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 8.Ryne Sandberg homered and knocked in 2 for Chicago.
MLB News And Notes
Twins hurler Frank Viola(7-3) was playing "sweet music" today,as he dominated the Royals, holding them to 0 runs on 3 hits over 8 fantastic innings leading the Twins to a 3-0 shutout victory.Twins 1B Kent Hrbek was the game's offensive standout, going 3 for 4 with a home run,1 RBI and 2 runs scored.Mark Gubicza(2-5) took the loss for KC.
Trailing the Cardinals 8-0 after 5 and a half, the Phillies stormed back, scoring 5 unanswered runs over the next several innings, setting up the dramatic 9th inning, where Cards closer Ken Dayley, retired the final two batters of the game with two men on base, white knuckling his way to his 9th save of the season.
