Mets Sign DePodesta as minor league manager
by Harry Jackson
The Mets confirmed a one year contract with former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta. DePodesta will manage the GCL Mets and serve is special assistant to Jack Lambert. Most famous for his role in Moneyball, the book about the Oakland A's by Michael Lewis, DePodesta was A's GM Billy Beane's assistant general manager from 2001-2004. Lambert says "Paul has a unique and effective way of evaluating amateurs and minor leaguers and I feel he will be a big help to me and the rest of the front office. Plus he will help the young drafted players into becoming good major leaguers." DePodesta was fired from his position with the Dodgers after a underachieving 71-91 season in 2005. He and Beane were known for embracing on-base percentage, leading the A's to a successful run, winning 102 and 103 games in 2001 and 2002 respectfully and AL West titles in 2002 and 2003. The A's were eliminated in the division series in all years.
