Pastime Baseball League

June Review (cont.)
Leaders as of July 1, 2012

The New Orleans Knights went 16-10 in June, keeping their hold on the Southern League's East division in a month in which four starters posted sub-4 ERAs to offset five starters hitting below .250. Sam Thompson (.314-6-19 for the month) and Ross Barnes (.316 on the month) got help from rookie Bob Horner (.333, 3 homers) on an otherwise anemic offense that led to Rich Harden posting a 1.96 ERA but going 2-3 on the month. Doc McJames and Dontrelle Willis, however, went a combined 7-0.>>

Trailing are the Memphis Strummers, who went 14-12 on the month and have shuffled things around greatly. Closer Jesse Tannehill has 17 saves, but has been placed in the rotation, as skipper Harry Wright has swapped him and rookie Steve Comer (3-3, 3.77). Rookies Ron Oester (.309-1-10) and Alan Trammell (.284-0-8) have taken over the middle infield after injuries to Cupid Childs and Otto Krueger. But the best month was had by Ty Wigginton, who after struggling the first two months of the season, hit .306 with 5 homers and 29 RBI in May.>>

The defending champion Orlando Orcas continue to hover around .500, led by Aaron Harang (9-4, 2.77) on the hill and Sam Crawford (.323-16-62) at the plate. Honus Wagner (.302-5-29) continues to hit well, which will be huge as the Orcas attempt to charge in the second half.>>

It was a tough month for the Alabama Airmen, as they strive to reach .500 for the first time. They dealt top winner Barry Zito to Orlando for Claude Ritchey at the end of the month, and have seen George Van Haltren surge into the batting race with a .334 mark on the strength of a .387 mark since May 1. But the 11-15 month ended their short-lived run above .500 and left them in the all-too familiar division cellar. >>

Newcomer George Hall posted an 1.129 OPS in his first 14 games with the Los Angeles Idols, who continue to hold first place in the Southern League West division. Rookie Eddie Murray hit .320 in part-time action after being called up once Justin Morneau was traded, and figures to continue to at least get part-time at bats the rest of the way. The Idols are currently sending out five hitters above .310, and Vern Stephens is batting .298 for baseball’s best offense. Pitching is another story, as starters Billy Rhines, Brian Lawrence and Rodrigo Lopez all have ERA’s above 5.20.>>

Chasing Los Angeles is the inverse, as the Arizona Sandmen boast the Southern League’s top pitching staff but rank 7th of 8 teams in runs scored. There’s hope, though, as Willie Wells returned from the DL to hit .287 with 4 homers on the month, rejoining Jose Reyes (.305) atop the order. Adrian Gonzalez has 11 homers and remains the only true power threat. Look for Arizona to deal for a power bat as July proceeds. Three months into the season, the Sandmen bullpen has a sparkling cumulative ERA of 1.81.>>

In Las Vegas, the Bosses starters have a cumulative WHIP over 1.50. That’s how you go 33-47. Lip Pike (.290-20-49) carries the load. There’s offensive hope on the horizon, not necessarily for this year but the future. Lonnie Smith (.324), Tommy Holmes (.313) and Terry Puhl (.336) are laying groundwork to be a productive, if not powerful, outfield going forward. The pitching, however, must improve.>>

There is no larger shock than what’s happened to the San Antonio Sheriffs, who two years ago won 101 games and now sit 27-55, 20 ½ games out of first place before the All-Star break. Jimmy Williams and Hugh Duffy lead the team in homers and RBIs with 9-36 and 7-32, respectively. Both are hurt. Ted Trent is done for the year, as is closer Hideki Okajima. That’s a lot to take, but even so, the record was hard enough to swallow that Bobby Cox lost his job.>>
