We made a couple of deals as Spring Training came to an end...First a complicated trade, that included three teams. First we traded CF Bob Zupcic to the expansion Colorado Rockies in exchange for Alex Cole. Zupcic hit .276 3-43 in his only full season for the Red Sox, while Cole hit .255 0-16 between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Once that deal was consumated, we shipped Cole off the to the Florida Marlins, along with OF Ivan Calderon and a minor leaguer for CF Chuck Carr. Carr will provide us with stellar centerfield defense and speed at the bottom of the order. He hit just .219 last year, but stole 10 bases in only 22 games for the St. Louis Cardinals before being drafted in the expansion draft by the Marlins.
The second deal was a bit more significant as we sent SP Joe Hesketh to the Cleveland Indians for two minor leaguers, RP Julian Tavarez and superstar in waiting RF Manny Ramirez. Hesketh was 8-9 with a 4.36 ERA and one save in 30 games last year, 25 starts for the Red Sox. He struck out 104 and walked 58 in 148 2/3 IP. Tavarez will be assigned to AAA, while Ramirez will start the season in AA, but is expected to be in Fenway Park as early as later this year.
