4th May 1894, Chicago
Joe Walcott (21-0-0)(19) UD10 Jim Franey (13-3-0)(11)
Although Walcott was a wide margin winner he was not at his best. Franey became the only the second man to take 'The Barbados Demon' the distance and in doing so earned some praise.
Walcott coasted for much of the fight and followed his corner's instructions by taking a defensive attitude towards Franey.
There was talk ringside after the fight of Walcott taking on the winner of the upcomming Young Corbett and Mysterious Billy Smith bout, either of thos fighters will test Walcott's ability.
