Boxing Day Round 1 Fight 4 – McVey/Godfrey

Infinity had McVey, Bear Godfrey. Which of these experts would prove to be right? McVey displayed good ring movement in the first 2 rounds, but Godfrey landed the harder punches, and took them, 8-4 & 10-4. A wicked shot to the ribs had Sam in trouble in the 2nd. Round 3 was a desultory 7-6 affair, and Godfrey had more points and displayed more ring presence.

McVey rallied with a dominating 16-3 4th, as he poured home 41 punches, mostly jabs & hooks. The next 2 rounds were similar, as he pounded George, 16-4 & 21-3! Landing 45 times in each round, a booming hook had George wobbly in the 6th. In the 7th, he opened with a withering straight right, then floored Godfrey with a colossal hook. George was up at the count of 8, but only just, and tried to cover as Sam knocked him from pillar to post. At round’s end, 24-0, Godfrey was barely upright!

McVey had seized control of the fight with this blistering four round assault. Godfrey was content to clinch and rest in the 8th. He landed one hard cross, but the round ended deadlocked, 4-4. George rallied in the 9th, a do or die round. He landed a laser right to the midsection, and scored with other blows, even though he missed frequently as well. Sam came back in the last minute, but Godfrey had pulled it out, 12-6.

It all came down to the last round, and McVey chose to cover up. Alas, Godfrey came out slugging, and it was like the first quarter of the Baltimore Ravens – New England Patriots game, as he landed a hard hook and then scored a flash knockdown, good for a 3 count, with a combination that caught Sam off-balance. The round ended, 16-4 for Godfrey, and the knockdown could have implications in the final scoring!

McVey was angry with himself. He outlanded George, 268-115, with a KD of his own. I had it a draw, 95-95, in a fight McVey let slip through his fingers! The judges scored it 95-93 Godfrey, 94-94 and 95-94,…a majority decision for George Godfrey! Infinity was heartbroken, not to mention a bit angry. Bear was jubilant, just like the Ravens after their upset of mighty New England!
