25th July 1894, Madison Square Garden
American Lightweight Title
George Taylor (21-2-0)(9)(#5) SD12 Billy Ernst (Holder)(21-2-0)(9)(#5)
This one stunk the Garden out.
The fight itself was poor enough, but it appeared to nearly everyone at ringside that Ernst had done enough to retain his crown. When the result was announced there was a scuffle in the ring between the fighters cornermen.
During the bout itself, the end of most rounds were met with a chorus of boos, directed mainly at Taylor. The challenger appeared to be way out of condition as he entered the ring and it showed in the fight.
Taylor will likely be ordered to make a swift first defence of his title.
