William S Hart W12 Un, Emil Jannings
Hollywood March 1920.
Hart went someway to establishing himself as a real threat to take the world championship tourney here as seemingly given a new lease of life by his trainer John Ford he overcame the much fancied German fighter Emil Jannings himself trained by the skilled Ernst Lubitch.
The fight became a chess match quite early on and was a battle of both fighters impressive jabs with Hart's heavier weapon and his greater agression soon forcing the German onto the backfoot.
Hart took a close but early lead and this was increased in the 6th when Jannings suffered a nasty cut over his right eye the result of a very heavy jab from Hart. although it was not enough to stop the fight, the cut obviously bothered Jannings enough that it forced him further onto the backfoot allowing Hart and Ford to execute their gameplan.
Hart won a comfortable decision by five and four point margins to progress to the quarter finals of the tourney with ford stating that his veteran will continue to surprise the young guns of the current scene.
