NY Yankees 0
Chicago White Sox 1

The Cooperstown League began play today at Comiskey Park in Chicago on a cold afternoon where the tempature barely reached 40 degrees. All of the hype was to see the vaunted New York Yankees for the first time and Ed Walsh of the White Sox had the task of beating them.

A Don Mattingly single in the first inning was the only scratch of the game for a lineup that had Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle. Walsh would strike out eight and face 28 hitters in a brilliant performance that had New York literally out in the cold.

Whitey Ford for the Yankees also had a strong effort against the Sox and kept a shutout going before Sox outfielder Harold Baines took a fast ball through the cold air and gave the home team a one run lead with a home run.

Walsh competed his effort with a one hitter in maybe the most improbable start to this season.
