Yankees Break Out In Drubbing Of Sox
The New York Yankees came out in a big way to make all forget their shutout on opening day as they scored 16 runs and beat the White Sox and Mark Buehrle 16-2. The Yankees were paced by Babe Ruth who went 4-5 with three doubles and four RBI while Thurman Munson contributed a grand slam.
The Yankees scored seven runs in the second inning knocking Buehrle out of the game and pacing Ron Guidry to an easy win. The Yankees scored 16 runs on 16 hits and showed why the dominance of Ed Walsh was indeed so impresive on opening day.
Mets Walk Off In 11th For Second Win
Howard Johnson sent Met fans home happy as he hit a dramatic two run home run off Troy Pervical to in the 11th inning with a man on to give the Mets a one run lead. Wally Joyner had given the visitors the lead in the top of the 11th with a home run but Johnson had his moment of dramatics to give the Mets their second win.
Darryl Strawberry already showed his colors as he and manager Casey Stengel were ejected from the game for disputing a call in the 6th inning. The Mets have been paced by Jose Reyes at the top of the lineup who went 3-5 today and stole a base.
Marichal Falters In Big 9th For Nats
Juan Marichal isnt suppose to tire while throwing in the late innings but at the Polo Grounds today the hard throwing star was part of a Giants effort that allowed 9 runs in the ninth inning to fall 13-6 to the Washington Nationals.
Good enough for Cooperstown League?
The Nationals were lead by Alfonso Soriano who drove in four runs on 3 hits and is trying to silence the critics that said he was well in over his head at this level. The Nats remain one of the most talented teams in the league and their pitching, lead by Dave Martinez in this one, held Barry Bonds to 1 hit in his first nine atbats.
