It has to be three or less runs for a save. However if the tying runs are on base or at the plate and he retires them. And goes four innings then he will also get the save. Example 7-3 ball game bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, you bring in your reliever he get the guy up out to end the inning. Then he pitches the rest of the game allowing nothing then he would receive the save. Hope this helps.
