GCB RING RAP - ISSUE # 15 (December 31, 1901)

Welcome fight fans, we are so excited to tell you that this is the night that every one has been waiting for! The Chase For The Championships has finally reached it’s highest point. Tonight, we will show you our Official GCB World Rankings. And in doing so, will tell you what the match ups will be for all of our titles bouts coming up early in the 1902 year! Including, The GCB World Championship!
I tell you fans, our fighters have been giving it all to try and get themselves in a position of Ranking that would assure them of a long awaited title shot. Some have moved up at the last minute to earn a title shot, while some dropped down just out of reach. Tonight, the fighters not only had to concentrate on their matches, but they had people listening to matches around the world to keep up on the nearest competition.
Their nerves were on edge. Some responded to the pressure well and maintained their focus. Others cracked under the pressure and watched their title shot slip away between their fingers. Who made it? Who didn’t make it? Get ready, because we are going to give you our Official GCB World Rankings and announce to you who will be fighting for the first ever GCB World Title. Then we will give you our Official Regional Top Five for each Region and tell you who will be fighting for the Regional Titles.

These are our top twenty fighters as of December 31, 1901.
Coming in at #20 is Anthony The Shooting Star James with a record of 11-1 (2)
Anthony made a strong comeback this year after losing on 6-15. Many are surprised that he made it back into the top twenty, but he is a Shooting Star. And they do shine bright sometimes.

Coming in at #19 is another fighter that has overcome a couple of big upsets earlier in his career. He is Australia’s Mad dog Mike Raymond. He was able to pull together a 10-2 (6) record and catch the eye of our Ranking Committee.

Finishing the year at #18 is William Butterfly Abbot from Germany. Butterfly actually finished the year with a 12-0 (5) record, but the judges must not have been very impressed with his performances. He dropped down from # 12 in June. When asked about his slide in the Rankings Abbot responded, “Something is seriously wrong here. Since June I have been 3-0. What else can I do? I beat everybody thrown at me. I can think of a few guys on the Ranking Committee that I would like to go a couple of rounds with!”

Making his Debut in our top twenty at #17 is Ireland’s Russell Gwynn. Gwynn was expected to shoot to the top ever since we began the GCB, but an early loss due to a DQ apparently bothered our Ranking Committee. There is only so long that they could punish him for that. He has fought his way up to a 10-1-1 (6) record and fought his way into the minds of our Committee!

Coming in at #16 is USA’s John Wright. Living up to his nickname of The Doctor, John with the precision of a surgeon, has sliced his way into our year’s end top twenty. His record of 12-0 (9) makes him one of the most impressive fighters in the GCB and we will soon see him in the running for a title match!

Cool Clarence Adams comes in at #15. Cool overcame a Draw a few months ago to hold onto a top twenty spot. Clarence has a record of 11-0-1 (4). He has not really been boxing at the top of his game lately, but hopefully that will improve.

#14 on our list is Mexico’s Luis Gomez. Gomez also had a draw early in his career that haunted him for a while, but 12 wins in a row is surely a ghost buster that gets everyone’s attention! Luis finished this year with a 11-0-1 (6) record and seems to be heading up the ladder of GCB success.

Henry The Prince Wales of The UK comes in at #13. With a slow start and age against him, The Prince continues to impress every one that watches him fight. Eleven wins in a row earns him respect enough to be considered one of the top fighters around and give him a 11-0-1 (4) record. When asked about how his age was effecting his in ring performance, Henry said, “You guys talk like 36 is old. If I listen to you I would check into an old folks home! Just keep sending the young kids at me and don’t be surprised if one of them gets hurt. I am in as good of shape as anyone. I’ll let you know when I’m ready to trade my gloves for a rocking chair.”

#12 has Claude Blitzkrieg Klitzer of Germany, moving up the rankings. Claude has moved up in every ranking published so far. A 12-0 (10) record tells us that it won’t be long before he moves on up to the top! Only three of Klitzer’s bouts have gone past six rounds! He is one of the most feared and respected fighters in the GCB.

Another fighter from Mexico, Miguel Torria, comes in at #11. While having two matches go to a Draw, “The Bull” still finished with a 10-0-2 (8) record catching the eye of the Committee. So far Torria is the highest ranked fighter from the Western Continental Region. He may not be in line for a World Title shot, but one has to wonder if a Regional Title is within his grasp.

Well fight fans, that is our end of the year rankings for our fighters ranked #11 to #20. As we enter into our top ten fighters of the past two years, I want to reemphasize that at least some of these will be getting an invitation to fight for Regional Titles and Two of them will get a chance to compete for the most prestigious title in the world, The GCB World Championship!

Now for the Official GCB Top Ten….

Finishing the year at #10 is Germany’s Big Bulluka, Lothar Baxtar! Rumbling, stumbling, but never falling, Baxtar continues to out score every opponent that he faces. With only one Knock Out to his credit, The Big Bulluka continues to prove that power is not everything. He finished the year with a 12-0 (1) record. Baxtar has become a huge fan favorite because it seems that in every match he is an underdog, yet he rolls on!

The #9 spot is filled with our first Russian boxer. Ollie The Mask Maskaevia. The Mask continues to be the talk of boxing. His flamboyant ring entrances continue to woo the fans while his 12-0 (7) record woos the Ranking Committee. Ollie has always worn extravagant robes and masks to the ring, but now he is greeted with thousands of fans wearing masks as well. Ollie is trying to come up with a name for his fans to show them the same support that they have shown him. If you have any suggestions let us know!

Coming in at #8 is Poland’s Big Sausage, Mo Arrington. The Sausage has gotten the attention of fans and judges alike with his 9 KO’s in his 12-0 record! When told about his ranking, Mo said, “This is great! I am as surprised as anyone! I mean, of course I knew that I was winning, but so are a lot of other guys. I’d like to win a major title in the GCB, maybe then we (People from Poland) could get some respect! We never quite get the respect that we deserve, this might help.”

Our youngest fighter in the top twenty comes in at #7. USA’s 23 year old sensation, Killer Kelly Carter, has been very impressive. In fact, there are some who say that he should be ranked higher than 7th. His 12-0 (10) record may suggest the same thing. Carter continues to stalk his opponents and pound them until they collapse. Only time will tell if Carter will be a champion, but I’ll bet there are 10 boxers out there that think so!
The man leading the GCB in KO’s with 11 comes in at #6, Russia’s Vlad Hinlitch. He has only had one bout that didn’t end with his opponent flat on his back for a ten count. Many say that in that match his foe was out but didn’t have sense to know it! The Russian Hammer has lived up to his nickname. One broken opponent actually asked the judges to check the gloves of Hinlitch during the bout. He was heard saying, “He has to have something in there! No man can hit that hard.” After the match, Vlad gave over his gloves to the judges to be inspected. Vlad’s opponent received this response, “THE GLOVES ARE FINE. IT’S HIS FISTS THAT ARE LOADED!”

Well fight fans, we are drawing closer now to our two top contenders. Remember, the #1 and #2 ranked fighters, after two years of bouts, will meet head on with one of them being crowned the first GCB World Champion!
We are about to enter into our top five. Before we do, let’s take a look at who our top five were in our last Official GCB World Rankings that we did in June.

This was our last top five. As we can see Mo “The Big Sausage” Arrington and Vlad “The Russian Hammer” Hinlitch have dropped out of our top five this month. With that being the case, there must be some that moved up. The question is, did they move up enough to earn a title shot? Let’s see how it all unfolds.

Coming in at #5, with a record of 12-0 (10) is Sir Harold Winston of the UK. Harold dropped down one notch, but was able to hold on to a top five position. He is the only fighter to be a top five contender in every ranking that we have had since the beginning of the GCB! Harold has been flawless with only two of his matches going past the sixth round. His 10 KO’s ranks him among the leaders in that category. When told about his end of the year ranking, Sir Harold was delighted. “I am so overwhelmed with this honor,” said Harold. “I have to give all the credit to my trainer Richie Giachetti. He keeps me focused on what I need to do and who I need to be. I hope this ranking puts me in line for a shot at the Central Continental Title!”

#4 is our biggest surprise of the year. Also from the UK and with a record of 11-1 (5), Denny Williams. We mentioned him last time as someone that we really needed to watch. The Ranking Committee has been watching him and apparently the like what they see! DW lost his first professional fight back on 1-1-1900. Many, including himself questioned his future. With eleven straight wins, it appears that those questions have been answered. Williams does have a bright future in the GCB!

We draw closer to seeing who our two competitors will be that face off for the GCB World Title. I want to remind everyone that after we find out who those two challengers will be, we will then reveal to everyone who the challengers will be for our three Regional Titles! Our next fighter while not a challenger yet for the World Title is guaranteed a shot at his Region’s Championship.

Coming in at #3 and a challenger for the Eastern Continental Championship, Italy’s Fillipi Doki! The faithful student of Ray “The Professor” Davi seems to have surpassed his mentor in ring talent. Fillipi finishes the year with a 12-0 (8) record and is guaranteed an Eastern Continental Title Shot! His opponent will be announced in a few moments.
This is it fight fans, the moment that we have all been waiting for. We have two spots remaining in our Official GCB World Rankings. These are the top two contenders and they will face each other on January 30, 1902 for the GCB World Title. These guys have earned this chance by working their way to the top of our organization. They have proved themselves in the ring to be champions at heart. They have pulled away from the rest of the pack and set themselves up as the standard by which a champion should be measured!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the two men that will fight it out for the GCB World Title…..

Coming in at #2 and earning a World Title Match is Argentina’s Collin “Tweety” Byrd! Not being known as a knock out fighter has always been a strike against Byrd, but his ring ability far out weighs the negatives. His 12-0 record has proven him to be an excellent competitor for all opponents. Collin has been a mainstay in our World Rankings since the beginning. He first entered in on December of 1900 at #14. By June of 1901, he had moved up to #3 and in the latter part of this year fought his way up to the #2 spot.
When told about his invitation to fight for the GCB World Title, Byrd was ecstatic, “I am so blown away by all of this. So many have criticized me for not being a power puncher like some of the other guys. I even went through a phase where I wanted to try and change my style to be more of a slugger, but I knew that just wasn’t me. I know I can hold my own against anyone, but I never expected a Title Shot so soon. I have to remember to continue to do what brought me here.”

Our #1 Ranked fighter and #1 contender for the GCB World Title is Canada’s, Joseph “Show Time” Metzger! With his 12-0 (9) record, he also brings to the ring one of the most energetic, charismatic fighting styles in the world! Metzger is full of excitement from start to finish of each fight. After his bouts, the fans go home just as tired as he is. He is a huge fan favorite and a solid contender for the World Title.

Well, there you have it, folks. On January 30, 1902, Joseph “Show Time” Metzger of Canada will face Collin “Tweety” Byrd of Argentina for the GCB World Title! It is sure to be a great fight!

Now, as promised, we want to show you our top five contenders in each of our three Regions. The top two in each Region that are not scheduled to fight for the World Title will face each other for the Regional Championship!
