Hello again. Bill here with some "Views from Section 100."
Today's is Opening Day at Fenway -- my 40th in a row if you can believe that. I've seen about everything the past four decades, and now I'm able to share this great/frustrating/memorable/gut-wrenching love affair with the Red Sox with my kids and grandkids...
Caught a few of the games in Baltimore, and my initial reaction on this team is mixed. Sure, Pedro had great stuff in the opener, and Curt Schilling and BK Kim were pretty solid. But the offense was definitely inconsistent. Where is Nomar? Ellis Burks? Manny? I think they left their bats in Fort Myers. I have to wonder what we would be like with A-Rod, although he's struggling a bit as well... Oh well, he's the enemy now...
Pokey Reese has surprised me the most. The kid went 4-for-4 in one game this week -- not bad for the number nine hitter. He can still fly down the basepaths, too and he's still go his defensive touch.
I'm definitely not sold on Keith Foulke as our closer. He's already blown a save and got a loss on his record. He just looks shaky, and the Orioles had little problem hitting off him. But the Sox paid good money for him, so we'll see what happens. And I started looking at the ages of these players -- we're an old team. Not too much in the farm system either, and word on the street is that the owners may shell out some of our top prospects in order to bring in some other bats or pitchers if the need arises. We better win it this year!!
Well, if you will excuse me, I'm taking the family out for our favorite lunch of clam cakes and chowder to celebrate the beginning of another season. Then it's off to the ballpark, and of course plenty of food there as well. See you in Section 100...
Keeping my fingers crossed in '04...
