PRESS CONFERENCE AFTER METZGER vs. BYRD WORLD TITLE FIGHT
Welcome fight fans, we are still jumping with excitement! Tonight we crowned our first ever Global Championship Boxing World Champion! For Two Years, these two guys fought against various opponents all over the world. After all was said and done, they finished on top as the #1 and #2 fighters in the GCB, earning them a Title Shot against each other.
This match was indeed a classic! We had two of the best boxers to ever lace up their boots going head to head. One came out a top contender and one came out the GCB World Champion!
Tonight live from New York and viewed exclusively on the TBCB “Inside The Ropes” forum, we saw what many here are calling a surprise ending to our first World Title fight! About an hour ago Collin “Tweety” Byrd of Argentina defeated Canada’s Joseph “Showtime” Metzger to become the GCB World Champion! Not that many are surprised that Byrd won the bout, but I don’t think anyone expected to see Byrd physically dominate Metzger the way that he did tonight!
Both fighters entered the Ring with a perfect record. Metzger with a 12-0 (9) record and Byrd with a 12-0 (3) record. Metzger, with his nine knock outs, has always been known for his slugging power and was expected to really give Byrd a pounding. BUT tonight it was Metzger who took the pounding! The usually light hitting Byrd unleashed a side of him that no one has seen before. Byrd knocked Metzger down four times in thirteen rounds with the last resulting in Metzger staying down for the count!
I have to admit that I personally had Byrd an under dog favorite going into the bout and expected him to outlast Metzger by points, but I had no idea that Collin “Tweety” Byrd was capable of such aggressiveness! He was on the offense the entire bout and was even so aggressive that the Referee had to take a point away from him twice in this fight. Once for backhanding and once for elbowing.
This style of slugging totally caught Metzger by surprise. I don’t think Byrd is a better slugger than Metzger, but I think Metzger was just completely caught off guard by Byrd tonight. We are going to have a very short press conference in just a moment to get the reaction of both fighters. I can’t wait to hear Metzger’s take on the fight. I hear the crowd cheering now. It appears that The New GCB World Champion, Collin Byrd is coming out. Let’s go there live….
The scene opens with the flashing of cameras and cheers of “CHAMP, CHAMP, CHAMP” echoing through out the building. Byrd with the World Title belt draped across his shoulders enters the room with his trainer, corner men, family and friends. He takes his place at the table as reporters and photographers jockey for closer positions around the Champ.
The cheers turn to mumbles and whispers as the door opens and out walks Metzger’s trainer, Jimmy Glen without Metzger. He takes a seat where Metzger should be sitting.
Jimmy Glen announces to the disappointed crowd that Metzger will not be coming out for the press conference. Saying that he just wants to be left alone right now. The reporters continue on…
“Congratulations,” says the first reporter to Byrd. “Champ, it is okay if we call you that isn’t it?” Humbly “Tweety” smiles in agreement.
“Champ, we gotta ask,” continues the reporter. “What happened out there tonight? We’ve never seen that side of you before.”
“Well,” responds The New Champ. “That was kind of the plan. We entered into this fight with an all or nothing attitude. We knew that we were going to have to reach down and find something that we’ve never found before if we were going to win. Metzger is awesome. Hey, I’m a boxing fan like the rest of you guys. “Showtime” is one of my favorites and I think he is the best out there. To have any chance, I had to take myself to another level tonight.”
“Tell us Champ,” asks another reporter. “What was going through your mind when you got the first knockdown in the fourth round?”
“Honestly,” laughed Byrd. “I thought to myself, ‘Uh oh, he’s going to get up and kick my butt! I’ve seen him do that before and he had fire in his eyes when he got up! I thought, well this has been nice. Time for me to check out.”
“Champ,” begins another reporter. “What are your plans now?”
“Well,” replies Byrd. “I’m going to take a little time off and spend with my family and then I hit the gym again.”
“Are you going to give Metzger a rematch?” asks another reporter.
“Sure,” smiles the Champ. “I think he would give me one if the decision went the other way. I don’t know if he will get the first shot, but he definitely will be in line for one.”
“How do you feel about Metzger not being here for this press conference?” asks a reporter.
“I guess he needs to pull himself together,” says the Champ. “I won and feel like disappearing for a while and recuperating. I expect he feels the same way. I’m sure he does not feel like answering a bunch of questions right now. Guys, really I need to go. I’ll answer one more question.”
All the reporters begin to raise their hands trying to get recognized by the Champ in hopes of getting the last question. They are suddenly quieted when the door opens. Out walks Joseph “Showtime” Metzger. He has a look of disgust on his face as he walks toward the table.
The Champ sensing that Metzger is up to something stands to his feet with a defensive posture. “Showtime” surprises everyone by walking past Byrd and walking up to his trainer, Jimmy Glen. The disgruntled loser of the fight grabs the microphone from in front of his trainer and says,
“Look, Jimmy. I hate to do this this way, but I am going to have to ask you to step down from being my trainer.”
Surprised, Jimmy responds, “What’s wrong, Joe? What did I do? If you had done what I told you, you would be wearing the Gold Belt right now!”
“I did what you told me,” said Metzger. “I told you that I needed to be more aggressive! I told you that I couldn’t hold back on this guy! But you wanted me to pace myself! You wanted me to let him wear himself out! The only one that got wore out was me. Jimmy, you took me out of my game. You didn’t let me fight my fight and I’m the one paying for it!”
“So,” said Jimmy. “It’s my fault you got knocked down four times? It’s my fault that you end up flat on your back? Man, this is crazy! Who are you going to blame for your next loss? Your right, Joe. I do need to stop being your trainer!”
Jimmy Glen pushes himself away from the table and walks out with reporters following and photographers flashing. The Champ leaves without saying a word leaving Metzger standing alone up on the platform. Reporters try to get his attention, Metzger shakes his head and walks out ending the press conference.
