I can't remember it all exactly now, but when Bill James first started putting out Abstracts in the early 80's he would often talk about the ideal turf team--fast, line drive power. Then one year he looked at a Phillies team that did well in the Vet, I think, and wondered how an old, and slow-as-molasses team had done so well.
His conclusion: good teams with good players win, and that in all likeliehood, the idea of building for a ballpark was vastly overrated.
