STUNNING UPSET AND LABLANCHE MAKES MOST OF 2ND CHANCE
August 22, 1903
Patsy Sweeney, rated 5, (2-1) stunned the boxing world with a 3rd Round TKO over Battling Nelson. Nelson, rated a 9, has been an underachiever his whole career. This fight dropped him to (6-8), yet he was still a 4-1 favorite over Sweeney.
Patsy took a thumb in the eye during the opening minute of round one and Nelson swarmed almost prompting the ref to stop the fight. Sweeney fought definsively in round 2 and in the corner the doc was talking about stopping the fight. With a sense of urgency he jumped Nelson in the opening seconds of round 3. Nelson went down for a 7 count, struggled to his feet and went right back down for a 3 count. Sweeney swarmed him opening a cut under Nelson's left eye and the over his right. Nelson was defenseless on the ropes at the 2:13 mark and the ref stepped in to stop it.
George LaBlanche (8-7) fought back from a 4th round knock down and knocked Jack Bonner (7-8) down in the 8th to win a UD10 in his first fight back in the upper division. This marked LaBlanche's 5th straight win.
