JOHNSON CRUISES TO HIS 4TH TITLE DEFENSE
February 5, 1904
Jack Johnson (15-1) wasted little time dictating how this fight would go when he dropped Billy "The Australian" Smith (11-5) in the opening minutes of teh bout. Smith hung on and faught galantly the rest of the fight. He was clearly overmatched and only took the 5th round from the champ. But he didn't run and stood in there giving himself a slugger's chance.
He was cut over the right eye in the 4th and his left eye started to swell shut in the 8th. Referee Raul Caiz, stopped the bout in the 12th when he felt the swelling was too bad to continue.
Markus, sitting ringside, and I had it 109-99. The official judges ruled the bout 110-99/109-99/108-100
