BRIGGS CAN'T HOLD TITLE

Billy Whistler (3-4-1) KO's champ Jimmy Briggs (2-3) in the 11th round to win the FW championship. Whistler rated a 3 survived a fast start by Briggs and wore down the champ. Briggs was down in the 8th, cut under his left eye in the 8th, and his left started to swell then also.

Whistler put Briggs down in the 10th and then out in the 11th.

"I guess I came out fast to prove I was worthy of the title," Briggs said after the fight. "I just wasn't in good enough shape to continue that pace."

"These two fighters have made the most of their opportunities," Mike Hanson, president of the LBA, stated after the fight in response to questions about two lowly thought of fighters holding the title. "Other lowly ranked fighters have had title shots in other divisions, Jimmy took advantage of his "one shot" and so did Billy, they shouldn't hang their heads because the press doesn't think they are worthy."

Whistler had a big lead on all the scorecards when he KO'd Briggs.
